Helen Perring Dobbs and Nicky Wordsworth possess an impressive combination of skills between them. Together, they run Mini First Aid Hull and East Riding and are taking the business from strength to strength. Helen and Nicky aim to have a local Mini First Aid class available to every family across the Hull and East Riding area which is no mean feat.

Helen

Helen has worked in a huge variety of nursing positions within the NHS for nearly thirty years. Parents and children at her classes will benefit hugely from Helen’s experience of working with families both in hospitals and the local community.

Helen is a registered Sick Children Nurse and worked on the baby wards at Hull Royal Infirmary. She went on to become Nursing Sister in the Child Development Service. Helen has also worked as part of the Children’s Community Nursing service, supporting children and families in their own home.

Helen says:

“I have experienced lots of emergency situations throughout my nursing career and have had a few first aid situations to deal with in the community as well, including a child on a bike who came over a grass bank, straight into the path of a bus. It is so important for everyone to learn first aid. You just never know when an accident or incident might occur and that feeling of being able to help someone in a difficult situation is so gratifying.”

Helen has her own personal reasons for leaving the nursing profession and joining Mini First Aid Hull. In 2013, she left her job to look after her son who became extremely ill and needed a double lung transplant. Thankfully, he made a full recovery. Following his recovery, Helen was ready for a fresh start and was looking for a more flexible role in which she could use and develop her skills. Mini First Aid Hull and East Riding was the perfect solution!

Nicky

Over twenty years ago, Nicky became a designated first aider at work. She went on to become Training Manager for Sure Start when it was first established and provided qualification first aid training for parents looking to get back into employment. Nicky became Manager of a children’s centre in Hull, before managing the Bridlington and Driffield Homestart programme and was struck by the demand from parents for short courses in child first aid. At the time, there was very little available, so when Nicky found out about Mini First Aid, she was delighted.

Nicky has also volunteered as a Special Constable and as a result, has administered first aid during many incidents in the rural and seaside community.
